AUM in Sanskrit is a word that defines consciousness in Hinduism -
* A - the conscious state (beta state of brainwave activity / the mundane day to day experience)
* U - the dreaming state (alpha state of brainwave activity / kids are more often in this state than adults, hence are more imaginative)
* M - the subconscious mind takes over (deep sleep or theta brainwave activity)
These 3 states are endorsed by modern medicine.
* Turiya - this is a key state that is additional to the first three. It defines the connection with the "ananta", the absolute and is represented by the "bindi" (dot) of the AUM syllable. This is postulated by Hindu philosophy and controls the first three states.
The turiya state encapsulates the phrase "Aham Brahmasmi". (I am Brahman).
It is like the observer in quantum mechanics - "the universe has meaning only if we put the observer at the center of it".
It is the "YOU".
This snippet of wisdom has been handed down from the Mandukya Upanishad.
So even finite beings like ourselves are connected with the Infinite.
